First Line Friday #25 :”The Blue Castle” + Readalong fun!

It’s time for a new edition of First Line Fridays hosted by the Hoarding Books blog!

Today is a day for classic literature! I’m sharing the first line of The Blue Castle by L. M. Montgomery because I’m about to read it (for the first time) for a readalong! Author Rachel McMillan is hosting/moderating a Facebook group to discuss as we read through it during the month of April.

If you are interested or you’d like to join, head over Rachel’s page or to the group here!

Rachel is also lending her experience and knowledge of L.M. Montgomery to add context to the story and setting as we go! Basically, it will be an in-depth look at the book and its world (published in 1926), plus an all around fangirling session over the story, Valancy, Barney, and the cats. (Rachel tells me there are 2 adorable fictional felines! Yay!)

Of all the covers I’ve seen, this is my favorite!

First Line:

If it had not rained on a certain May morning Valancy Stirling’s whole life would have been entirely different.

Your turn! Find the book closest to you and share your first line in the comments! Then, head over to Hoarding Books for the linky and visit other FLF posts!

  1. I loved reading L. M. Montgomery’s books!

Happy Friday! My first line is from “Remember Me” by Marion Ueckermann:

“Seated cross-legged on the floor of her bedroom with her two best friends, Clarise Aylward leaned forward and lit the candles on the birthday cake her mom had made for them.

    • Happy weekend! I’m happy to hear you’re a fan of L.M. Montgomery! This is actually my very first book of hers.

  2. Sounds like fun! My first line comes from Mending Fences by Suzanne Woods Fisher — A year had passed since Luke Schrock’s exile from Stoney Ridge began.

Hope you have a great weekend!

    • Ooh, that brings up all kinds of questions with just the first line! Thanks for sharing!

    • I’m already reading it!!!! I couldn’t wait, haha. Yes, I’m very excited to discuss all the things! SO glad you’re in the group, Miranda.

  3. This is my favorite first line of any! My daughters and I quote it all the time for various events.
I’m reading an advance copy of Introverted Mom by Jamie C. Martin, which starts, “You’re kind of a…homebody, aren’t you?” #introvertedmom

    • That’s so cool to hear, Joanna! And I like your first line. 🙂 I’m a homebody any time I can be!

  4. The Blue Castle is one of my favorites! I’ve re-read it many times. You are in for a treat!
That is what I dropped in to say, but
here is a first line from another favorite, Cry the Beloved Country, by Alan Paton.
“There is a lovely road that runs from Ixopo into the hills. These hills are grass-covered and rolling, and they are lovely beyond any singing of it.”

    • That’s a lovely first line!!! And yay for loving The Blue Castle! I’m very excited to see what all the fuss is about 😉

  5. I love The Blue Castle… I never knew Montgomery had written anything but Anne of Green Gables and the Emily books… Nothing else had been translated into Danish!

So when I looked for a Public Domain title and stumbled over all of Montgomery’s other works, I immediately talked the publisher into letting me translate it 🙂
Det Blå Slot… is the name of the book in Danish.

We made a completely new front page, and published the book for sale on our website, but we thought, why not place it for free in the English speaking version?
So, if anyone wants to join the read along and need an on-line free copy, feel free to download it here:

Right now, I am reading another book, which I am going to translate…
Conan, the Barbarian, by Robert E. Howard 🙂

THE KING OF VENDHYA was dying. Through the hot, stifling night the temple gongs boomed and the conchs roared.

    Smiles from Lea in Denmark.

    • Thanks for sharing about the Danish translation, Lea! I’m so glad it’s now available for more people to read! I’m looking forward to discussing this more in the group. 🙂 Happy reading!

  6. Great First Line!
Mine is First Line, “The wail of a ship’s whistle jerked Anna Wilson from sleep despite the cotton wadding she’d shoved in her ears before bed.”
This is from The Great Lakes Lighthouse Brides Collection by multiple authors.
    Have a wonderful weekend!
    Blessings~ 💖

  7. I think we are doing the same readalong! I hope you enjoy The Blue Castle (it’s my favorite LM Montgomery). I’m featuring Beauty in Battle by Robin Patchen today. Here are the first lines from Chapter Nine:

“This is it?” Jack peered at the rusty sign hung from the front of a rundown brick building. This wasn’t the ending to the morning he’d envisioned.

    Happy Friday!

    • Yes we are, Yvette! YAY for loving it! I’m excited to “discover” why everyone loves it so much. Happy reading!

  8. I’ve never read this either, but that first line makes me want to read more 🙂

I’m sharing the first line from A Hero for Miss Hatherleigh on my blog today. I’m currently up to Chapter Seven, and here’s the first line:

The next time at services Caroline did her best to recall why she attended, to fix her thoughts on the service and not on the gentleman seated two rows behind her on her left.

    • The Blue Castle is proving to be quite entertaining! You should read it with us – there’s still lots of time to join in this first week. And the book is relatively short!

      Happy reading!

    • Allow me to convince you, Becca!!!! It’s short. Like, 250 pages. AND the facebook group is a super easy way to participate! Either way, I hope you have a great week!
