It’s time for a new edition of First Line Fridays hosted by the Hoarding Books blog!
Today is a day for classic literature! I’m sharing the first line of The Blue Castle by L. M. Montgomery because I’m about to read it (for the first time) for a readalong! Author Rachel McMillan is hosting/moderating a Facebook group to discuss as we read through it during the month of April.

Rachel is also lending her experience and knowledge of L.M. Montgomery to add context to the story and setting as we go! Basically, it will be an in-depth look at the book and its world (published in 1926), plus an all around fangirling session over the story, Valancy, Barney, and the cats. (Rachel tells me there are 2 adorable fictional felines! Yay!)

Sounds like fun! My first line comes from Mending Fences by Suzanne Woods Fisher — A year had passed since Luke Schrock’s exile from Stoney Ridge began.

This is my favorite first line of any! My daughters and I quote it all the time for various events.

The Blue Castle is one of my favorites! I’ve re-read it many times. You are in for a treat!
That is what I dropped in to say, but
here is a first line from another favorite, Cry the Beloved Country, by Alan Paton.
“There is a lovely road that runs from Ixopo into the hills. These hills are grass-covered and rolling, and they are lovely beyond any singing of it.”
That’s a lovely first line!!! And yay for loving The Blue Castle! I’m very excited to see what all the fuss is about 😉
I love The Blue Castle… I never knew Montgomery had written anything but Anne of Green Gables and the Emily books… Nothing else had been translated into Danish!
So when I looked for a Public Domain title and stumbled over all of Montgomery’s other works, I immediately talked the publisher into letting me translate it 🙂
Det Blå Slot… is the name of the book in Danish.
We made a completely new front page, and published the book for sale on our website, but we thought, why not place it for free in the English speaking version?
