About the Book

“Tromp weaves a complex historical tale incorporating love, suspense, hurt, and healing—all the elements that keep the pages turning.”

~ Julie Cantrell, New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author of Perennials

Charlotte Anne Mattas longs to turn back the clock. Before her husband, Sam, went to serve his country in the war, he was the man everyone could rely on—responsible, intelligent, and loving. But the person who’s come back to their family farm is very different from the protector Annie remembers. Sam’s experience in the Pacific theater has left him broken in ways no one can understand—but that everyone is learning to fear.

Tongues start wagging after Sam nearly kills his own brother. Now when he claims to have seen men on the mountain when no one else has seen them, Annie isn’t the only one questioning his sanity and her safety. If there were criminals haunting the hills, there should be evidence beyond his claims. Is he really seeing what he says, or is his war-tortured mind conjuring ghosts?

Annie desperately wants to believe her husband. But between his irrational choices and his nightmares leaking into the daytime, she’s terrified he’s going mad. Can she trust God to heal Sam’s mental wounds—or will sticking by him mean keeping her marriage at the cost of her own life?

Debut novelist Janyre Tromp delivers a deliciously eerie, Hitchcockian story filled with love and suspense. Readers of psychological thrillers and historical fiction by Jaime Jo Wright and Sarah Sundin will add Tromp to their favorite authors list.

Review

Shadows in the Mind’s Eye is a riveting historical mystery with plenty of twists and psychological suspense. Set just after WWII, it follows Sam’s homecoming and early days adjusting to civilian life on his Arkansas mountain farm, where events and his imagination collide causing Sam and his family to question reality and his sanity.

Annie is a strong, relatable character, whose heartbreaking past colors her perception and reactions to the new reality of Sam’s return, bringing her own set of doubts concerning who to trust and believe. Sam, very much the hero of the story, exhibits a relatable vulnerability and the strains a trauma such as war can cause. A great cast of additional characters, from friends to villains to beloved family members, round out the story. Dovie May, in particular, sheds light and wisdom on a few different situations, bringing a strong theme of HOPE in the shadows and chaos to the forefront.

I think it is clever that both Annie and Sam’s points of view alternate to ground the reader in their perspectives. As events unfold, Annie and Sam question the stability of their dynamic and the confidence they have in adjusting to a new normal postwar. Their points of view also serve to show the reader the sacrifice and strength of character required on both sides of war — active service and the homefront.

It is always fascinating to learn real-life history through novels, and Tromp accomplishes this with an atmospheric flair as real historical figures and the subterfuge of illegal activities provide a backdrop to the story. As an Arkansan myself, I have visited the Hot Springs area and the Ouachita Mountains where Sam and Annie make their home, and I can confidently say Janyre Tromp has perfectly captured the setting of this novel!

Sweater Weather is here!!! (A Tag)

Let’s venture off-topic a little and talk about sweater weather today, AKA autumn. Amber over at Seasons of Humility has tagged me in The Sweater Weather Tag, so let’s talk about fall!

Favorite candle scent

I’m going with a Christmas scent here: peppermint. Specifically, Yankee Candle’s North Pole scent. It just smells festive!

Coffee, tea, or hot chocolate?

If you’re forcing me to pick one, tea. I love it all: hot tea, iced tea (SWEET iced tea. This is the south.), lukewarm tea….I’ll take it any way I can.

What’s the best fall memory you have?

This one is tough! I’m going to go with one of my many favorites: hiking with my family a few years ago to Hawksbill Crag (AKA Whitaker Point) as the leaves were just past their peak. It was beautiful! Something I will never forget.

Best fragrance for fall

Cinnamon. I love cinnamon in anything (oatmeal, tea, ice cream, apple pie, pumpkin pie, etc.). It just smells like the season!

Favorite Thanksgiving food

Pumpkin pie!!! And, it has to have REAL whipped cream. If you’re at my Mamaw’s at Thanksgiving, you have to make your dessert plate early just to make sure my cousins don’t get all the whipped cream (you know who you are) 🙂

Most worn sweater

Hmm. Maybe my comfy brown zippered one? I tend to wear it around home all winter.

Football games or jumping in leaf piles?

Leaf piles! That’s another fall memory with family — playing in the leaves. And climbing the trees.

Skinny jeans or leggings?

Skinny jeans

Combat boots or Uggs?

Hiking/hunting boots, for sure!

Is pumpkin spice worth the hype?

Yes, but only if you REALLY like pumpkin. One or two pumpkin spices lattes a season, and I’m good. But I do love the opportunity to try and make all things pumpkin this time of year. Pumpkin pancakes, anyone?

Favorite fall TV show

This year, I’m going to have to say fall Hallmark movies.

What do you want to be for Halloween?

No idea!!! This year I’m pretty last minute with deciding because I’ll be working.

Hats or scarves?

Both!!!! Especially if they match 🙂

What’s your #1 favorite thing about fall?

Trees. Seeing them reveal their true colors is almost magical. Almost a metaphor: when your character is revealed, will you display something vibrant underneath?

That was fun!!! I’m tagging Beckie and anyone else who wants to join!

What are your favorite things about fall???? Please share in the comments.

Snow on the Mountain

It’s snowing here in Northwest Arkansas! After somewhat of a mild winter, I’m excited about the possibility of snow pictures. I just love getting out in the snow and traipsing around with my camera. I usually end up with freezing hands and feet, but I think it’s worth it. 🙂

Here are a couple shots I’ve taken already from my porch.

December Photo-a-Day Challenge 21 & 22

22. "Tradition" Cranberry Crisp Candy by courtneyec90

December Photo Challenge, Days 21 and 22, “Peace” and “Tradition”.

I think this photo of a pine at sunset is very peaceful. It is a great example of natural beauty in Arkansas!

This Cranberry Crisp Candy is a tradition at my house. We make it every year around Christmas. It combines great sweet and savory ingredients for a perfect combination of flavors – with a slight crunch from Rice Krispies!

Here’s the recipe:

1 package vanilla-flavored almond bark (or white chocolate almond bark)

2 cups Rice Krispies cereal

3/4 cup dried cranberries (Craisins)

3/4 cup toasted slivered almonds

Combine dried cranberries and almonds, set aside. Melt almond bark in a microwave-safe bowl, stir in Rice Krispies and half of the cranberry-almond mixture. Spread on to parchment-lined baking sheet (candy should be about 1/3 inch thick). Sprinkle remaining cranberry-almond mixture on top and press in slightly with your fingertips. Let cool and set up completely. Break into small pieces. Enjoy with a cup of tea of coffee!
